Saludos Latino Equity Community,

The impact of family separations at the U.S. border has hit most of us hard and in different ways. As a community we want to come together in whatever way possible to give voice and resources to helping those most impacted by this inhumane way of treating families at the border.

LEP Founder and Lead Facilitator Ana Pérez’s recent San Francisco Chronicle op-ed tells us that “families coming to the U.S-Mexico border are no different than our own.” Read more of her thoughts on these families and our responsibility to hold our government accountable here.

There are many ways to get involved in supporting families affected by our government’s border policies. Here are a few options to explore, and we welcome your suggestions of additional resources for upcoming newsletters.

Donate:

ACLU: The ACLU is currently raising money to help defend asylum-seeking parents forcibly separated from their children.

Vinicio Fund for Unaccompanied Children: Seeks to build community support through donations to meet the emergency and/or basic needs of children and youth being represented in immigration court and participating in our other social service programs.

Volunteer:

Texas Civil Rights Project: TCRP is seeking volunteers who speak Spanish, Mam, Q’eqchi’ or K’iche’ and have paralegal or legal assistant experience.

Bilingual social workers living near where immigrants are being detained can help by serving as translators with support organizations. And we can all contact elected officials and communicate our demands that these cruel and unjust policies be stopped.
